Queensboro Community College 5/10/2018

During the winter semester at Queensboro Community College in Bayside, Queens, NY, employees from Korg USA and their Educational Division, SoundTree, visited and spoke with students about music technology, synthesizers, music education and careers in the music industry.

Under the direction of Professor Ernie Jackson, music students at QCC study a robust curriculum that covers everything from the basics of music production and looping, to advanced recording techniques and sound design. Korg products have been an integral part of Prof. Jackson’s curriculum – He uses a Kronos, MS20 and Arp Odyssey to give students experience with hands-on sound creation, and the College’s piano lab recently installed the GEC5 system to enhance the level of instruction in that classroom.

As part of his “Career Training” portion of the curriculum, the College invited Nick Kwas, Korg Technology Product Specialist, Nick Spadafora, Videographer from Korg USA’s Marketing Department, and Chris Norris SoundTree Sales Representative, to speak to his students. “The day was a personal highlight for me” said Prof. Jackson. “Our partners at Korg/SoundTree came to QCC and gave an excellent demonstration on products (Minilogue, Monologue, and Kronos), and a very informative lecture on jobs in the music industry and the various opportunities they provide.”

They discussed the various paths a music degree can take your career; beyond just being a performer or producer, there are also sales, marketing, product support, content creation, programming, and product development opportunities that students may not be aware of. After the discussion, the students got some hands-on time with the Korg gear they brought for the demonstration.

The Korg Representatives “came and stayed for four hours.” Prof. Jackson continued. “They talked to the students, let them play ‘the toys’, and answered numerous questions from the class. We were given a personal invite to visit their showroom as a class. It was a great day. This career partner is significant because we are a school that is training and providing quality education in this field”
